3rd year of EDCA

Today marks the 3rd year of the signing of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) that allows the US to operate PH facilities or so-called “agreed locations” as military bases and to preposition war materiel. With the escalating US-North Korea tension, there is all the more reason for #Duterte to abrogate this lopsided agreement to prevent involvement in US conflict overseas. #JunkEDCA #USTroopsOutNow

ASEAN 2017

Long weekend but no thanks to the ASEAN Meeting where leaders will discuss further deepening of economic liberalization that has only caused depressed wages, contractual jobs, stunted agriculture and manufacturing sectors, and widespread poverty.

Today marks the 5th year of the Supreme Court decision ordering the distribution of Cojuangco-controlled Hacienda Luisita to farmers. Landlords still have control over the estate. But today, landless farmers will #OccupyLuisita and retrieve their land.

#TigilPasada #NoToJeepneyPhaseOut

Were you affected by the jeepney strike today?

Jeepney drivers have been long burdened by incessant oil hikes that stem from the government’s policy of oil deregulation. It allows oil cartels to connive and set oil price at high rates.

To add, the Duterte administration is bent on imposing additional taxes on fuel products on top of the twelve percent (12%) value-added tax (VAT). Among the products covered are diesel, which will be imposed a tax of P6 per liter, as well as cooking gas and bunker fuel for generating electricity. These levies will hit not only jeepney drivers but the middle class and low-income earners as well.

Now they are threatened by the planned jeepney phaseout in the face of modernization. Only big companies can afford vehicle replacement and small operators will be edged out.

Instead of perceiving it as mere inconvenience, consider it as a reason to challenge the government’s neoliberal policies (i.e. deregulation and privatization).

On the Suspension of the GRP-NDFP Peace Talks

U.S. tags NPA as a terrorist group anew. Duterte suspends GRP-NDFP peace talks, declares CPP-NPA-NDFP as a terrorist group, and orders military to spend every bullet against rebels.

Indeed, GRP President Duterte is after the capitulation of the people’s revolutionary movement, not the necessary socio-economic and political reforms that will address the root causes of the decades-long civil war in PH.

Compelling reason to continue peace talks? Is public clamor for just and lasting peace that is based on economic, social justice not enough?
